On May 22nd 2008, Bernie Brown purchased the Auckland FM frequency 106.2 at auction in Wellington.
For the first time, restrictions were placed around a commercial radio frequency – it couldn't be owned by an existing broadcaster and it had to always broadcast as an Auckland only station. The frequency cost just $800,000 – a bargain considering the previous Auckland frequency had sold for more than $6 million over four years ago!
Within a fortnight, eight key shareholders were on board and premises were found in Northcote. We broadcast from next to the Warehouse head office, just over the Harbour Bridge, with spectacular views across our city.
Building and fitout began straight away – the goal was to create a fun and vibrant workplace that staff look forward to coming to each day. When you walk in the door you're greeted with a warm smile, Jaffas and plenty of fun and games. Snakes and Ladders feature above one work station, while a massive dart board shoots out of another!
As a local station our whole focus is Auckland and we're unique, with our fulltime news team covering the stories Aucklanders care about. We place equal emphasis on news and sport to represent Aucklanders as the positive people we are.
We are Auckland - move to the sound of Auckland with us!
