The Government is looking at cutting back on free off-peak travel for the elderly as the cost of the scheme mounts.
Transport Minister Steven Joyce says the travel subsidy under the SuperGold card is set to exceed its $18 million-a-year budget, with the Waiheke Island ferry singled out as especially expensive.
The ferry costs $2 million a year - with the government paying the operator $13 a ticket.
They are also looking at how "off peak" is defined.
