More Opposition to CCOs

Labour's Auckland Issues spokesman Phil Twyford has joined the army of people urging Local Government Minister Rodney Hide to come clean about his council controlled organisations.

Details of how the CCO directors will be selected and what power they will hold was released last week, sending panic waves through the region.

Mr Twyford says Mr Hide has been misleading Aucklanders in an attempt to calm public concerns about the super city.

Green Party spokesman David Clendon is also calling for changes to the final Super City bill.

Mr Clendon says the clauses which detail CCOs need to be removed as the legislation as it stands makes them Rodney Hide controlled organisations.

He says under the current Bill, CCOs would be set up for the Auckland City Council before its Councillors are elected and Aucklanders would not be able to change the CCOs or alter their powers for at least two years.
